What I Meant Was…

Born With My Foot In My Mouth

It seems politicians aren’t the only ones who speak without thinking first.  A couple of weeks ago, Canada’s Minister of State for Women, Helena Guergis, went all medieval on Charlottetown Airport employees when she told them she’d “been down here working my ass off for you people.”  Guergis was running late for her flight and didn’t like being told she should have shown up sooner.

The incident gave Canadians a laugh and they moved on.  But since then there’ve been examples from those other than politicians that demonstrate there must be something in the continental water supply.

Last week, former veteran news anchor Dan Rather appeared on Chris Matthews’ show on MSNBC and was discussing Obama’s problems in getting his health-bill passed.   Said Rather, in the now infamous quote “…he couldn’t sell watermelons if you gave him the state troopers to flag down the traffic.”

The West Watermelon Wing

Hmmm…  Racist?  Or stupid?  Probably the latter.  In a widespread apology Rather insisted “selling watermelons by the side of the road” was something that was a throwback to his youth in Texas when it was the custom for vendors of any race to sell watermelons by the side of the road.  The part about the state troopers, though, was his own.  Way to go, Dan.

Our last example comes from one of my favourite modern day philosophers, Glenn Beck.  Beck has just discovered the lyrics to Bruce Springsteen’s 26-year old hit Born In The USA.  And guess what?  He doesn’t like what he hears.

Born down in a dead man’s town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You end up like a dog that’s been beat too much
‘Til you spend half your life just covering up
Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.

Says Beck, “It’s time for us to wake up out of our dream state. Out of the propaganda… This is the thing that people who come from the Soviet bloc or Cuba, they’re all saying, How do you guys not hear this? How are you not seeing this?”

Beck…Born in the USA, just not Springsteen’s USA

C’mon Glenn, get over it.  It’s just a song.

Wait ’till he discovers Eve of Destruction.
